Ultrasonic testing is a Non-Destructive Testing method which utilizes sound waves to detect defects, cracks and other discontinuities in various parts and materials. It also detects surface flaws, internal flaws, and this can also be used to determine the material’s thickness like measuring the wall thickness of a pipe.

It uses ultrasonic waves which are similar to the pressure waves or mechanical vibrations and are similar to the audible sound waves but with a higher frequency of vibration. According to the test requirements, the waves can be versatile with their directions and can focus on smaller spots or thinner lines. These are also limited to a very short duration.

Ultrasonic Testing uses 2 methods for flaw detections which are mainly shear wave method and compression wave method.
