PILE INTEGRITY TEST

Pile integrity testis a group of non-destructive testing methodologies which are used by contractors, geo-technical engineers, and others to perform quality control and quality assurance tests for deep foundations and piles. The most common NDT methods for evaluation of pile integrity test are:

  • Low-Strain Pile Integrity Test
  • Crosshole Sonic Logging
  • Thermal Integrity Test

What is the Pile Integrity?

The major foundation of any surface purely depends on the concrete piles and drilled shafts which help in transferring heavy superstructures like bridges, high buildings, etc. Pile integrity is referred to various characteristics related to piles and deep foundations as:

  • The Physical dimension of piles like length and cross-section
  • Continuity of the piles in the presence of voids or major cracks
  • Pile material consistency

The pile integrity can cause the below problems

  • Drilling problems
  • Design and detail deficiencies
  • Slurry or casing management problems
  • Other general construction problems

The geometry of pile integration elements such as diameter, length, and presence of steel cage can make certain challenges during the construction:

  • Concrete placement issues
  • Pile formation issues
  • Steel cage installation issues and many others

What is the Pile Integrity Test?

Pile integrity test evolves the qualitative evaluation of the pile continuity, physical dimensions, pile material consistency, and many other aspects.

There are varieties of methods for pile integrity testing developed in past decades with the goal of evaluating the integrity of the piles. The pile integrity test method selection depends on various parameters like:

  • Pile type
  • Pile dimension
  • Soil condition and many others

Applications of Pile Integrity Test

There are wide ranges of pile integrity test applications that help in identifying and measures the test. Here are few major applications:

  • Evaluating unknown length of pile or elements
  • Evaluate the cross-sectional area and length of the pile
  • Determining the continuity and integrity of the piles surface
  • Consistency evaluation of the pile material

Limitations of the Pile Integrity Test

As there are various applications, there are certain sets of limitations in the pile integrity test. Here are a few:

  • This test doesn’t provide information on the deep foundations and load-bearing capacity of piles.
  • This integrity testing cannot be performed on pile caps
  • This testing below major cross-section cracks is not possible
  • This pile integrity test is not effective for the high-variable cross-section piles
  • A Pile integrity test is not suitable for steel sheet testing, H-section testing, unfilled pile pipes, etc.
  • If we don’t get evident toe refection results, then the integrity evaluation may not be conclusive.
